One Day Yoga Workshop

This one day workshop will focus on Yogasana as taught by Stewart Gilchrist. Jenny Marsh teaches in London and will take the two classes. The morning will start with a dynamic 1.5 hour class followed by a talk by naturopath, Lucy Shardlow, on the importance of protein for all diets and why this can be overlooked and misunderstood.

After a light lunch from Studio Britford’s organic vegetable garden there will an opportunity to ask questions. The day will finish with a restorative yoga class and sound bath. The restorative yoga will mainly be floor based but there will be a standing sequence.

Jenny Marsh was introduced to yoga by Edward Clark (Tripsichore) in 1996. Deciding after 25+ years of practice that she had something to offer as a teacher, she completed her 500 hour Yogasana teaching qualification with Stewart Gilchrist (East London School of Yoga). Jenny also teaches Restorative Yoga and Pranayama. Jenny’s classes are rooted in yoga philosophy, she gives strong physical adjustments and her classes are energetic and fun.

Jenny remains deeply grateful to all of her teachers: Stewart Gilchrist, Anna Ashby, Carolyn Cowan, Ambra Vallo and Edward Clark.

Lucy Shardlow is an naturopath. She also works with bio-resonance feedback and will have a Q&A session during and after lunch for those interested in learning more.

Living a Full Life - How ancient yogic philosophy can help us all thrive in the modern world.

This is a powerful and joyful deep dive for experienced yogis and non-yogis alike.

The day will cover the 8 limbs of yogic philosophy.

Do you want to thrive? Do you want to be comfortable with the uncomfortable? The ancient yogis had the answers. This millennia old, tried and tested philosophy can have a practical impact on our life NOW. It offers guidance, motivation and easy applicable tools. If we are aware of the benefits of kindness and truthfulness and can use our energy in a positive way, we not only enrich ourselves but everything and everyone around us.

AT A GLANCE: we will cover:

  • Attitudes and beliefs for balanced living.

  • Physical practice for balancing the body.

  • the use of breath for managing emotions.

  • concentration to calm the mind.

  • resting in awareness.

  • group reflection and taking action.

We will come together in community to learn about our attitudes to ourselves and others and how to make actionable commitments leading to more compassionate and balanced living. We breakdown a simple physical practice that will lead to feeling at ease in our bodies. We will explore how breath can either energise or calm the body and help us manage our emotional states so that we are able to sit in stillness and connect to our true Self.

Following this there is a period of deep relaxation and sound immersion.

We end the day with the opportunity for shared group reflection, questions and insights.

There will be a light lunch of salad and fruit and tea, coffee, juice and biscuits are available throughout the day.

WHETHER YOU HAVE NEVER HAD ANY YOGA EXPERIENCE BEFORE OR HAVE A REGULAR PRACTICE OVER A LONG PERIOD, YOGIC PHILOSOPHY IS A DEEPLY, ENRICHING AND PRACTICAL FRAMEWORK FOR LIFE.

Yoga Workshop - forward bends
Oct

Yoga Workshop - forward bends

Forward bends, both standing and sitting have many benefits. We can create space and length in the spine and reduce and release compression. They have an inward nature which can lead us to a deep meditative space and to introspection. Equally they can be challenging especially if we are stiff or have tight hamstrings. This workshop will stress the importance of alignment so that we avoid over stretching or hunching - something many of us do when working at a computer.

Forward bends can be a way to meet resistance and to find new ways of acceptance and of experiencing ourselves. The aim of the workshop is to help us discover and cultivate and deeper and richer yoga practice, allowing us to approach forward bends with new ease and insight. There is a tendency to force stretching - forward bends are not about how deep you can go but instead how far you can release. There is no struggle, no force to get to a position which we imagine we should be in but rather to wait for the body to be ready. With this attitude, it will surrender to the moment. We can notice the experience this and use the breath to let go and in so doing we honour the body and let it unfold at its own pace. You will find that you will go deeper than you imagine. This is the principle of Ahimsa, one of the five yamas which includes to do no physical harm.

Introduction to Vipassana Meditation

Introduction to Vipassana Meditation

COURSE POSTPONED. NEW DATE TO FOLLOW.

This course will be led by Angus MacInnes who has many years experience of practicing Vipassana meditation at various centres around the world. He currently lives in Hungary where he is part of the Hungarian Vipassana teaching community in Budapest.

The course is an introduction into Anapana and Vipassana meditation. It will be in noble silence and is a preparatory course for those interested in exploring either longer retreats or wishing to cultivate their own daily practice. There are opportunities to ask questions in a one to one setting and to experience a total of 25 hours of meditation. Each sitting will be around an hour except for the first sitting in the morning which is two hours. In between, practitioners are free to walk around the garden or just spend time alone resting. There will be a vegetarian breakfast and lunch and the evening meal will be fruit in keeping with Vipassana principles ie 12 hours of fasting. This leads to a deeper meditation in the morning.

The goal of Vipassana is to clear the mind whereas the goal of Anapana is the concentration of mind.

Vipassana means "to see things as they really are"; it is a logical process of mental purification through self-observation. For self-observation, one penetrates one's entire physical and mental structure with the clarity of insight. For this, we need a medium, a tool, which will lead us to the root level of the mind, from where the negativities and impurities arise - that medium is the breath. Observing the breath is called Anapana.

Anapana meditation is a way to calm or slow the restless fleeting mind and bring it back to a particular object or base, thereby having a degree of control over the mind. Anapana meditation has its own immense benefits, but it is the means, not the end. It helps us to concentrate the mind, so that mind is calmer and more focused, thereby, better able to undertake the practice of Vipassana itself.

Camping is available in the grounds. Meals are vegetarian.

Schedule:

20th July: 5pm arrive. Set up tents

6pm — 7.30pm There will be a light supper and afterwards orientation.

7.30-9pm Noble silence will commence for the duration of the course and Angus will give instruction on the technique and the first mediation session will begin (one hour). If there are any questions, he is available afterwards to speak privately.

21st July: We will learn Vipassana and anapana

22nd July: Vipassana and anapana

23rd July: The course ends after the morning mediation. There is the option to have a gong bath 11am-12pm which can be booked separately under What’s On Gong Baths.

The course is for everyone and is a serious commitment to both oneself and too co-meditators.

Minimum donation: £75

There are a limited amount of places in order to provide maximum support. For those that are interested please email Angus who will send you a short questionnaire to find out more about your experience and motivation. angus@forestpeoples.org

Morning Explorative Yoga session

An explorative, immersive and organic movement workshop.

This 2.5 hour workshop is led by Andrea, a Himalayan Hatha and Meditation teacher who encourages people to explore beyond the narrative of asanas to find an honest connection with their bodies.

This is a gentle interactive process that helps us navigate the inner conflict, stagnation and patterning we encounter in our mechanical daily movement. It allows us to free ourselves of what we perceive as 'right or wrong' movement allowing us to be open and inquisitive as to where the body is going to move next - the narration of our minds is side stepped and we move into the unexpected and the unknown. We erase the boundaries of what we think our bodies can do.

An opportunity to allow the body to unfold rather than instructing and controlling movement.

£39 and includes refreshments afterwards.

RESILIENCE RETREAT

to Nov 28

RESILIENCE RETREAT

This retreat aims to provide active and manageable ways to become embodied, to develop skills to build resilience and to explore ways to embrace all that we are without judgement, fear or expectation. Learning new practices to incorporate into our lives often is short lived because they are either too long, too hard or too complicated. This retreat is an experiential weekend and the modalities are laid out in a practical manner so they can be easily woven into daily life. We are in a period of uncertainty. It is easy to lose vision and clarity at such a time and how we approach and navigate choices is fundamental to our health and happiness. Anxiety, fear and feeling ungrounded are a fast track to ill health.

By the time you leave on Sunday, we hope you will feel connected, confident and have an inner knowing that you can maintain a sense of calm even during times of turbulence. This is the most valuable gift to the Self.

Throughout the weekend various practices will be introduced that will help nurture resilience as we become more attuned to the language and needs of our body.

On Friday afternoon we will have a yoga session followed by a gong bath. At supper that evening we will discuss breathwork and the importance of intention. This is an opportunity to journal, to chat and exchange ideas, to be reflective. There is plenty of space and fires in two rooms so you can relax and tune into yourself. We will have an evening meditation for those staying in the house.

On Saturday we start the day with kirtan led by Tim Byford. It is a deeply calming, meditative and joyful practice. It is optional as it's early -7.30am -8.15am. A dynamic yoga practice suitable for all abilities follows. Each yoga session is 1.5 hours. There are 2 teachers – Sarah Marten and Lucy Shardlow. We then have a healthy organic breakfast.
Breathwork sessions run on both Saturday and Sunday. These will be led by Natalie Keany a facilitator at BBTRS (a global breathwork organisation – Biodynamic Trauma Release). The time given for these is 2 hours as there is an integration period and a warm up exercise. Sarah who has also trained in this method will support.

There are daily Gong Baths with an array of percussion instruments and include harp, guitar and harmonium.

A soundscape -forest bathing will take place on Saturday in the most ancient yew wood in the UK which is a short 10 minute drive from the Studio – drums and gongs.

Vegetarian meals with locally grown organic vegetables and fruits.

In the early evening there will be a yang/yin yoga class – less dynamic than the morning, followed by the gong bath and then supper.

There is plenty of space to relax and rooms with fires or you can relax in your room.
We will end the day with an optional group meditation.

The house is surrounded by a large garden and water meadows. There is an outdoor shower for those who like a proper wake up. This weekend offers a journey to your stillness and it is here that you will find many treasures including a sense of wellbeing and connectedness which can transform how we approach the way we choose to live.

Cost without accommodation but including everything else: £300 (suitable for those who live nearby or those who wish to book separate accommodation locally)

Cost including accommodation: Single shared occupancy £360

INTRODUCTION TO GONG YOGA
Sep
5
9:00 AM09:00

INTRODUCTION TO GONG YOGA

This workshop is the first in UK and is led by Tim Byford. He has written:

Inhale deep….and as you exhale, let out a lovely breathy ahhhhhh sound. Inhale deep and ….ahhhhhhh. continue slow and deep breathing (you can drop the ahhhh now or just say it in your head) and check in with your posture. Straighten your spine. Roll your shoulders back and down and allow them to relax. Bring the corners of your mouth up creating a………….smile allow the corners of your eyes to crinkle with this smile…. And say to yourself ‘I am a wonder and deserve all the treasures of life’. As you smile and breath deeply repeat this affirmation a few times few times. ‘I am a wonder and deserve all the treasures of life’…………………………. now stretch your arms above your head and ……………..bring your arms down and release and relax fully with an ahhhhhhh sound and a little shake of the body.

How was that? How do you feel?

Of course there is more we can do. However a lot can be done in 30-90 seconds and the engagement of body, breath sound and mantra/affirmation can be a powerful pick me up at any point in your busy day. And there is more.

Gong Yoga is a combination of movement, breath, affirmation or mantra and sacred sound. It is designed as a yoga for everyone. It does not contain any complex asana (postures) but rather simple accessible movement. It is designed as a reprogramming tool to escape the emotional wheel of karma and come to fully resonant health. It is designed to be super efficient. It is designed to lead the practitioner to their own totally intuitive form of yoga practice.

History.

Gong Yoga was created by Grand Gong Master Don Conreaux. It was born out of his extensive working with Both Kundalini yoga and Gong Meditations and, as mentioned above, was created with the intention of making yoga practice open to everyone regardless of age and physical condition.

What the Morning will consist of.

The morning will be divided into three sessions.

  1. Introduction and teaching of some basic yoga tools and an opportunity to do a quick and easy emotional self assessment and write your own personal affirmation.

  2. A gong yoga session incorporating movement, breath, affirmation and sound.

  3. A gong Bath.

There will then be an opportunity to share your experiences with the group, to recap and suggestions as to how you can apply what you have learnt in everyday life.

Important information.

The event will be conducted in line with social distancing guidelines.

Please where loose fitting clothes and bring with you your own water bottle.

Pre booking is essential.

Yoga Organic Movement and Breath Workshop followed by lunch

  • Google Calendar ICS

In this 3 hour workshop with Andrea Baburske and Sarah Marten we explore the freedom of organic movement within our yoga practice and as such allow a transition beyond the shape and form of the Asana. Exploring this natural sense of freedom within our bodies has a profound effect on our well being and facilitates the passage of energy through the physical body. By dropping all expectation, we encourage our bodies to access a range of movement of which we previously may have been unaware and we can access a flow of emotion that is both joyful and life enhancing. This is a wonderful state from which to enter a breath work session. No prior experience needed - just an open heart and mind.
The aim of this workshop is to develop a felt sense so that we understand how our bodies hold the wisdom for a healthy and happy life.
£35 - light lunch afterwards.

ALL NIGHT SOLSTICE GONG PUJA

to Jun 22

ALL NIGHT SOLSTICE GONG PUJA

  • Google Calendar ICS

This year because the solstice falls early on 21st and the following day is Saturday, we will have the gong puja on the evening of 21st. This will start with some meditation and drumming before settling down for the night at 11pm. Mats, bolsters, blankets and cushions will be provided but if you have a camping mattress, it may be an idea to bring it to provide extra padding. Extra blankets will be given to those who wish to pad up their mats.

The gong bath finishes at 6.30am on 22nd and then we gather around the fire with our own individual intention and you can choose to write down any negative belief that is holding you back and limiting your gifts and capabilities. A cooked breakfast is provided after this and you will leave fully restored and refreshed and brimming with vim! Those that come every year often say how the time passes very quickly as they fell asleep and the state of relaxation reached, even if it doesn’t include sleep is immensely restorative. You will have more energy than usual on Saturday morning and even go to work if this is required.

The history of sound for healing can be traced back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians, Australia’s Aborigines and the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, the "Father of Mathematics" who utilised sound to treat mind and body ailments. This is a unique opportunity to bathe in the wide frequencies of the gongs for 7 1/2 hours.

ONE DAY WORKSHOP: DIVE INTO SELF- yoga, dance, gongs, breathwork, meditation
Jun

10:00 AM10:00

ONE DAY WORKSHOP: DIVE INTO SELF- yoga, dance, gongs, breathwork, meditation

THIS ONE DAY WORKSHOP EXPLORES MODALITIES THAT WILL OPEN THE BODY AND MIND RELEASING STAGNANT ENERGY AND REVITALISING MIND AND BODY:

10am - 5.30PM

10am - 11.15am Dance/Movement Meditation. The day will begin with Claudia Schrick from Zurich who will guide us through a series of easy movement and  dynamic dance meditations. Her style of dancing has been inspired and influenced  by the  Hawaiian Hula Dance,  a form of dancing deeply connected with spirituality. In essence it is a philosophy of life closely aligned with nature, showing profound respect and appreciation for all living things and it is a combination of meditation, imagination and dance.

Participants will be uplifting their energy with some freestyle dancing, guided by intentions as the body is invited to express thoughts with arm and hand movements. A person’s full potential is reached in this way because body and mind are symbiotically working together and supporting each other. The movements are repeated in a similar way that a mantra is recited. With repetition one dives deeper into calm. It is the expression of ones mindset though movement and is immensely liberating. Claudia is known as one of Europe’s most innovative teachers in this area.

11.30am -1pm Vinyasa yoga. This is suitable for everyone, both beginners and those who regularly attend classes. Each asana will have adaptations and the class will be slow, allowing those who wish to hold poses and focus on strength and alignment to do so whilst beginners may wish to do an alternative more relaxing pose. The class will finish with a 15 mins restorative/savasana.

1pm-2pm LUNCH. This will be vegetarian and most of the vegetables will be from the garden.

2pm-2.30pm. Walking meditation and guided sitting meditation. This is an opportunity to walk the new labyrinth which will be in the water meadow. We follow each other with conscious steps and enter and exit without repeating any of the path. This will take around 15 mins follow by a visualisation meditation in the Studio.

2.30-3.30pm Clarity Breathwork. An opportunity to experience the power of the breath and begin to dive into the sub conscious. It will be new to many of you and I encourage you to come to this session. It will be facilitated by Claudia and Sarah who are both fully qualified Clarity Breathwork Practitioners. Most of the time you will be lying down and there will be music so you are totally unaware of other people. It has without doubt been the most transformative modalities that both Claudia and I have done. There is more information on this website. There will be a short break between the next session.

4pm- 5pm: Gong Bath. Time to relax and feel the healing vibrations of the gongs. We know from research and experience that opening up the body with yoga and breath accelerates the healing power of the gongs as the body and mind reach deeper states of consciousness. Healing occurs when the body is fully relaxed and the mind is still.

5pm ..ish. Refreshments and teas. A time to ground and to chat to others at the end of this workshop. Claudia and I are there to answer any questions you may have.

COST: £80 including lunch.

ALL NIGHT SOLSTICE GONG PUJA

ALL NIGHT SOLSTICE GONG PUJA

SUMMER SOLSTICE SOUND JOURNEY

We start the evening with some gentle yoga nidra, guitar music and breath work to induce relaxation. The gongs will be played by Tim and Sarah for 7.5 hours and ending at around 6.15am. After coming back to yourself and consciousness there will be a silent walk around the garden for those that would like this and then we go to the fire pit where there is the chance to do some drumming or to continue walking around the meadows.

A cooked breakfast will be served around 7am (including vegetarian option) . The bath is a wonderful opportunity to relax, release, lucid dream, let go and surrender to the vibrations. Re-charge and leave feeling refreshed, liberated and energised.

The vibrations of the Gongs are an effective way to enter the Theta State. Theta waves help to reduce blood pressure, relieve stress and stimulate the immune system. 20 minutes of Theta Relaxation is the equivalent to four hours sleep.
An all night gong bath (we play only gongs unlike the weekly gong baths where we start with a variety of percussion instruments) can realign our natural vibration and allow us to experience a higher state of awareness. You may notice that your hearing is heightened by the morning and you pick up on bird song, leaves on the trees and other noises that are in the garden and water meadows.

Open to everyone. £50. Please bring extra padding if you need it- mats, blankets, bolsters and eye masks are provide but you may benefit from an airbed, duvet and extra cushions. Please book.

TRANCE DANCE: DECEMBER 2017-MAY 2018 DATES

Held once a month on a Sunday morning this next event will be an opportunity to herald the arrival of Spring after the rollercoaster of snow/warmth/snow.

Details of the sessions are in previous posts. This life-affirming ritual that allows for self-exploration and transformation through music and movement.

The sound tracks change each month and are specifically chosen to enhance healing and self knowledge. To have the opportunity to unplug from the visual stimulus that connects us to our surroundings, Trance Dance allows us to recalibrate our ideas and perceptions of time and space. Our normal compass - sight, is covered and we are enabled through the music to connect deeply with our bodies and with our Self. The seemingly intractable problems of day to day living recede as we delve inwards and the spontaneous movement of our bodies over-rides the chatter of our minds. The primary focus of Trance Dance is to heal on all levels. Unless we are at one with our mind, body and spirit in equal parts we cannot reach the equilibruim that allows us to be the joyful, healthy human we are born to be.

TRANCE DANCE: JANUARY- MARCH DATES

TRANCE DANCE: JANUARY- MARCH DATES

Held once a month on a Sunday morning this next morning will be an opportunity to get temperatures rising in this coldness. Maximum number 14.

This is a powerful ritual designed to foster self-exploration and transformation through music and movement.

“The sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being” - Carl Jung

Trance Dance is a unique blend of body movement, healing sounds, dynamic percussive rhythms, transformational breathing techniques and the innovative use of a blindfold or bandana - which together stimulate a 'trance' state that promotes spiritual awakenings, mental clarity, physical stamina and emotional well-being.

Driven by unique musical soundtracks recorded specifically for this method of healing, Trance Dance takes participants on an 'inner journey' not limited to our normal perceptions of space/time. Ritual trance journeys have been a vital part of shamanic and eastern dance cultures for thousands of years. Our contemporary approach to Trance Dance brings together the richness of these ancient rituals with some startlingly effective modern techniques.
Trance Dance's primary focus is on healing and spiritual evolution. By dancing within the seclusion of darkness participants discover parallel realities where solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems are possible. Through Trance Dance we disappear, becoming more like spirit, and simultaneously less attached to life's ordinary difficulties, making it possible at these moments to let these problems go.   £17/session. Please wear comfortable clothes. It will be in bare feet and the floor is heated.
